I’m new as in this is my first day using lemmy. I don’t know anything about lemmy etiquette and don’t want to do anything bad
thanks and have an amazing day! also plz be kind :D
First thing, Lemmy is in need of content and likes recruiting. Hence you got 315 replies, heh.
Basically, if you aren’t a bigot, you don’t have to worry about what you say. You can be politically incorrect in any direction and not get a global/shadowban from the Fediverse.
Each instance has its own flavor and etiquette.
All the lurkers said hi!

Welcome friend! Unless youre French Canadian, in that case you can fuck right off
Instances are a big difference. Most interfaces, apps, clients for Lemmy will show you the instance (server) in which a user registered their account. There are kind of “instance wars” inside Lemmy, because, between these “wars” they believe an instance, in general, bears their flag and support some kind of ideology.
Please, talk to other users as people, no matter their instance, don’t ever judge them for that.
So when I came here from Reddit I didn’t know what to pick, so I picked .world figuring it would be bigger or something. Over time it seems like people are saying that .ml is just horrible. I actually thought that .ml stood for militant full of right wing tankies ( don’t know the exact definition of that either). Lately someone essentially berated me for being on the worst one. Just now, I went to the little pull out on the side to see how to change it and what the options were and didn’t even see how to do that.
Bottom line, I have no clue how any of this works. I just wanted to see some interesting content, news from a different perspective, some fun memes, and some cool comments. I don’t even understand what fediverse means other than it’s kind of like borg technology, meaning that the information is spread across a bunch of servers instead of a single point of failure.
Maybe one day I’ll look into all of this, but seriously I have a life. As long as I open it and get what I want, I’m good. I almost never post because they are almost always removed for violating some rule. The last time I posted a question on a Linux forum and was getting some really good answers only to have it removed for violating a rule I didn’t even understand. LOL.
Good luck to you.
“Tankie” is just a pejorative for Marxists in the form of a strawman laden with contradictions. Marxism-Leninism is by no means right-wing, but that just goes to show you how ridiculous the strawman is. Lemmy.world is more liberal, anti-communist, so there’s lots of red scare fearmongering over there.
As a side note, if you want a broader user experience, it might be better to make an account on sopuli.xyz or something like it that doesn’t block the major leftist instances like Hexbear.net and Lemmygrad.ml, which Lemmy.world unfortunately does.
Lemmy is majority socialist and not communist. So as most liberals are, they are destined to hate on each other because neither side can pass the ‘purity tests’ each side cooks up.
Y’all deserve each other most of the time.
All communists are at first socialists, communism is a post-socialist mode of production. Liberals on the other hand support capitalism, and do unfortunately outnumber the socialists/communists. It isn’t about “purity tests,” there are fundamental disagreements among people that cannot be reconciled.
At the most basic level, it’s still purity testing.
Not all disagreements are “purity testing.”
Unless it’s a meme reference (lol same) comments are generally more thought out and well constructed, as you can see from the replies here.
No ads disturb on here so reddit is worse.
It’s basically the same. Lemmy is kind of what reddit felt like before it got huge and astroturfed, it’s smaller which can be as much a benefit as a detriment depending what your after. I find interaction here tends to feel more human than reddit, on reddit comment threads especially in political subreddits you already know what the comments are gonna say before you get there, here i feel as though there is a bit more genuine thought. That being said Lemmy is not immune to echo chambers or trolls, as any bit of the internet is. Just use as you would use reddit honestly and just know your likely not to see as much content, but the content you see will get a more GENUINE feeling interaction. That’s my take anyhow.
the major benefit is there isn’t enough of a dipshit brigade to drown out the genuine smart people who are saying insightful things… yet
but i’ve been here over a year, and the dipshit brigade is growing rapidly. soon enough they will become mods and start banning anyone who doesn’t agree with their dipshit agenda. but at least their power will be limited to only banning you on their particular instance.
reddit used to have lots of cool diverse voices, and that all ended once it became popular enough that your parents new what it was and corporations were desperate to use it to shrill and advertise.
personally i felt like anytime i sub went over 100,000 subscribers it rapidly went to shit. if it was under 100K it was usually a pretty cool place that allowed productive and interesting disagreement and various POV. then once the userbase grew the mods would always become ban happy for anyone they didn’t like who didn’t agree with their agenda/beliefs, and would hypocritically start lecturing users on tolerance and diversity and non abusive behaviour, while banning people over personal disagreements they had with users. i remember i once got banned in cycling subreddit because is said I thought Doritos were gross and the mod basically told me to go f myself for not like the same snack food as he did. lol
I’ve noticed that if you’re center or center-right here you get downvoted to oblivion or outright have your comments deleted by mods. It’s not really advertised, people have to find out the hard way. At least reddit has TrueUnpopularOpinion for people across the political spectrum to discuss with each other, and there’s nothing similar here at all.
Complaining about “violent antifa psychos” isn’t really constructive discussion, it’s just open admission to being against antifascism.
Removed by mod
Im new to lemmy too, and im already getting shadow deleted…
I’m here for over a year and I still don’t get much of what’s going on here.
For example, why posts are titled “rule”.
Honestly not really that different from Reddit. My only warning is make sure to check the community a post is from that you see on ‘main’. There’s a couple female only communities and holy shit do they get pissed if you accidentally comment because you found a topic interesting enough to but didn’t check that it was a female only community.
I respectfully commented in there once and was politely asked not to. It wasn’t really that militant, but I did get that vibe, so I believe you that that would happen.
Lol, I noticed that. I suggested making membership closed/vetted if you are going to get that upset about it
Lemmy offers more freedom, more privacy, and your data is not sold. Unlike other social networks, Lemmy is part of the fediverse, so you have to choose a server that suits your tastes and preferences. Reddit has subreddits, and Lemmy has communities. Reddit does not respect privacy, but Lemmy does.
Average user age is slightly more older here.
The three most common groups are .world(liberals), .ml(socialists), and .blahaj(uwu)
I don’t see much difference between here and Reddit tbh. The major difference, however, is the in-fighting amongst the instances here, namely the tankie instances such as .ml and hexbear versus the rest of the fediverse.
That’s certainly one way to frame it, though I don’t think it’s particularly accurate. In general, there are 3 major groups:
-
The Marxist-Leninists. On Lemmy, the overwhelming majority of Marxists are MLs. The MLs are found primarily on Lemmy.ml, Hexbear.net, and Lemmygrad.ml. This group was here first.
-
The anarchists. These vary much more than the Marxists do in views. They are primarily found on dbzer0/anarchist nexus, Hexbear.net, and some on slrpnk.net. This group arrived a bit after the Marxists.
-
The liberals. These vary a bit more than the anarchists do, from the more cryptofascist-aligned primarily found on sh.itjust.works, to the more DNC-aligned found on Lemmy.world, to the more social democratic found on blahaj and slrpnk.net. This group is where most newcomers go to.
These 3 groups make up the broad majority, and each instance has their own mixtute of the 3 major groups. This largely shapes how instances interact. There isn’t a grand Marxist war on the fediverse, you’re looking from the more liberal-aligned side of things.
my experience of lemmy is groups 1 and 2 just attack and insult group 3.
at best they try to ‘educate’ you about how stupid you are for not being a communist or anarchist.
groups 1 and 2 don’t seem to have much tolerance for anyone who doesn’t believe in their ideologically rigid world view
Leftists don’t really have “rigid” worldviews, but consistent ones. It takes a great deal of confronting the status quo ideologically, as well as study, in order to definitively say that capitalism has to go. Liberals tend to just be born into their liberalism, and thus often hold extremely contradictory or irrational views.

80% of the comments i get screaming at me how i am a fascist pig are .ml users.
