Also, all art is political. I dont know if memes are art, but they are the result of a creative process.
Politics isn’t just when you see something you disagree with or something that outright makes a clear political statement. A quick example: Will & Grace, old sitcom, very cute, nothing deep there. Bunch of people were mad about that one because some of the main characters are gay.
      Yes, rothko is also political

To misquote an aristocraric rapist snitch belowed by liberals: “The opinion that memes should have nothing to do with politics is itself a political attitude” - George Orwell

Here’s the top meme from the comm

It depicts a man and a woman. They have been in a sexual relationship for a long while, yet the man still expresses attraction at the womans naked body, to her annoyance.
Apart from just depicting a heterosexual relationship (and this specific type of relationship) as normal and thus in turn helping normalise it, there are also many other things one could comment on. Gender roles - the man is the active person in this situation. Objectifying women. Other stuff.
“It’s not that deep” the reader will say or “that’s not what they intended!” or “thats not bad though!” and I will agree.
The normalisation of the type of relationship isn’t bad, but something does not have to be bad to be political. We normalise all sorts of things all the time.
And I am sure the author didnt think of these thing when they made the comic. But they are still present because the comic is a product of the author and the author is a product of their culture. The very fact that these things are not considered is due to the politics of the society of the author. Take that same comic strip and publish it in a different society or a different decade and it would be viewed differently.

      Next meme:

A picture of a drawing of a cat in the medium of snow on a public road. Someone used temporary materials created by the local climate to make public art on a municipal road. There is so much here that is political, I believe the description itself is more than enough to convey that.

This was the first meme I saw on the comm:

A single mother commenting on her toddler wishing to help her because she has to do so much due to being a single mother. That is political.

      Last one:

Basically just a written conversation. Two tumblr users comment on the form and function of the English language, expressing their frustration. Again, just by describing it I feel like the “politics” (you as a reader should understand that I am not describing the politics, but just some elements which are political. You might consider something else about it “political”.) are readily available by the description.

My point is that almost everything in the public sphere is political in some way and will thus be perceived as political by some people. Gamergaters scream about “politics in video games” when the main character is queer, POC or female. They’re not technically incorrect in that those choices are political, they’re just incorrect in the statement that everything else isn’t. Same goes for the memes you see that annoy you due to politics. All the other memes are political as well - Probably. I dont know if memes are art, so there might be some that aren’t, but I dont have an example in mind.

It’s pretty cringe seeing yanks still going on about how voting totally works and how they can still turn the country around through good old fashioned representative democracy. My dudes, wake up. If you can only choose between two options then there is no choice at all. Independents are just there to further the illusion that casting a vote matters. Even if the Dems held power for the next 20 years they still would not stop the border abuses, or create free healthcare, or lower education costs, or regulate the police or do anything to prevent or stop the genocide in Palestine. Look to Obama and Biden, sure they behaved better than Trump but Obama still bombed hospitals and Biden happily ripped apart families and kidnapped children at the border. Accept that you are an evil empire and only your destruction or collapse can lead to a better future, for all of us.

Because doing the same thing we always do, which is how we’ve come to this point, will definitely change this this time… As opposed to trying literally anything else, which, since we’ve never tried to do it, we can with complete certainty say will not work.

              Brilliant reasoning you got there.

There is more to do than just vote. Not voting democrat isn’t the only thing in the world.
Secondly Not voting for a candidate is not “ceding” anything, you are, by definition, not giving them something. In reality “vote blue no matter who” is “ceding your choice”, since you cede all leverage and all reason to consider you when considering popular support for policy positions, since you will vote for them no matter what. You have ceded your vote to them.

You are also using accelerationist incorrectly. An accelerationist would vote for the most competent accumulator of capital, since an accelerationist believes this to be the end-point of capitalism and this point must be reached before socialist revolution can happen. They wish to get to that point as quickly as possible. The accelerationist position would most likely lead to a person voting democrat, since they are more competent administrators of empire.

the assumption that you’re ceding your choice or that your choice is going to make a difference is were reality gets disconnected.

the fact of the matter is, we’ve been voting this way for most of a century now and it has already lead us to the same places that your understanding of accelerationism would lead us to anyways – climate change that’s guaranteed to fuck up human civilization; a panopticon powered by AI, financed by genociders, and will keep feeding off your body for the rest of your life like you’re in the matrix; and a ruling epstein class that’s so privileged it can literally publicly flaunt it’s depraved desires to fuck/kill children with zero repercussions.

you should not expect anything to change by voting and history proves that substantial & enduring changes can only comes from us.

still you should vote, even if it’s for your dog, but there are better uses for it. the epstein class assumes that you will vote for one of their approved parties, so cooperating in this system the way they want you to only serves to help validate it at best.

Youre the only one talking about voting for a dog. Youre also the one who’s reducing all political action down to voting.

And you’re also the one who is arguing against “don’t vote democrat” on the basis of “we need to change things”, which seems like the least logical line of reasoning available. By doing the same thing we have done every election so far, by further entrenching the group we wish to replace or reform, we will somehow affect change because… Even though it’s the same people and the same conditions you think it will be different this time?
                  Actual psychosis.

voting on lemmy doesn’t matter – only the stomach you have for questioning your own indoctrination does.

voting for your dog isn’t realistic, but voting for psl or green or communist is realistic and many countries have been doing it for decades and things are much better for their people as result compared to americans.

voting to change anything also isn’t realistic, but mexico proved that it was still possible in 2017 and that’s why they have president shienbaum while we’re stuck with president trump.

Youre depicting Democrats as angels despite all the horrible shit they do. So it is completely reasonable to conclude what they concluded about your position. Thats not what a strawman is, a strawman isn’t just “when you adress the logical conclusions to the other persons statement”.
If youre going to make an attempt at pseudo-intellectual dismissals of other people, at least learn how the fallacy you’re referring to functions.

You dont care about people outside of the US. You are a nationalist. Your only fear with regards to politics is experiencing the pain your regime brings upon other countries every day. All of these statements are reasonable assertions based on what you had written so far.

My meme doesn’t specify the angel box is democrats. The point is that people who assume voting does not matter are contributing to the worse outcome happening, which is true. I do have the personal belief that democrats are meaningfully better than republicans on domestic and foreign policy, but no, I do not think they are angels. I think my responses have made that clear and so taking the meme literally over the opinions I have explicitly expressed and argued for is incorrect.

And yes, their argument is a strawman. They wanted to feel good about disagreeing with someone who unpersons foreigners and does not care about people outside of their country, so they decided that’s who I was. This completely ignores very reasonable explanations such as “it’s possible to care about more than one thing at once”. The point of calling their argument a strawman is to express that no, they are not describing my position accurately.

And neither are you. I care about people outside the US. Would it be valid to say you don’t care about people inside the US because you are telling us not to improve our domestic policies? I support the ICC and other extranational oversight measures. Obviously I care about the wellbeing of the US a lot (I live here) but my decisions don’t fail to take the health of other nations into account, so no, I am not a nationalist. Claiming things like “you don’t consider [people outside your own country] humans” is patently ridiculous (honestly it’s straight up libel) when I have not expressed those views. It’s a strawman because they are responding not to what was said, but to what they falsely imagine my beliefs to be.

My meme doesn’t specify the angel box is democrats.

So the way conversation works is that responses like yours come after statements made by someone else and the responses are made in and viewed in the context of the wider conversation. So when the meme is about Democrats and republicans and you then give it your own little spin with a similar binary, people rightfully conclude you’re saying Democrats are angels. I can empathise that this might be tough when youre a horrible person, like you, who doesn’t get a lot of chances for proper social interaction, so I get you might struggle with the concept. Youre welcome for explaining it to you.
Now, something else people do, is look at what else you are saying and they also use that to understand what you’re trying to illustrate thru an artistic medium. From your other statements it is clear you consider them angels. Which means youre a fascist genocidal cop-loving racist homophobe - even if you say you aren’t - because your actions are ones of running defence for fascist genocidal cop-loving racist homophobes. You know like when your bullies grab your arms and make you punch yourself and they ask you “why are you punching yourself?” youre not really punching yourself - they are, even though they say something different, it is what they are doing that matters.

I do have the personal belief that democrats are meaningfully better than republicans on domestic and foreign policy

Sweet, I believe dragons are real but that doesn’t make it so either. In reality dragons dont exist, there is no queen of England and the democrats are as bad domestivally and with foreign policy.

I care about people outside the US.

No, you just say you do. You do not give a fuck about foreigners if you vote for genociders. Especially not when you depict them as angels compared to republicans.

The rest of your screed is just you retreading things that have already been refuted and saying things that are answered by READING THE LINKED TEXT. At this point its clear you’re just trolling, since you dont actually want to discuss things - You dont engage with the text given to you, you ignore what people write, you hide behind misused rhetorics, you fail to engage arguments presented. I am not interested in arguing for the sake of arguing, I find trolling like what youre attempting to be sad and tiresome. If you just want to troll just post goatse or some lazy one-liner, that way we can all know to dismiss you immediately.

Surely you can think of a better way to affect meaningful change than sitting in a basement accusing random people online of being fascists. You do realize this is detrimental to your cause?

Then again, maybe you don’t… yeah, probably not. What a waste.

They both fuck over minorities, they both increase deportations, they are both warmongers, they both do genocide, they both fuck over the climate, they both fuck over women, they both fuck over queer people, they are both parties full of geriatric genocidal fascist pedophiles.

“Think” might be a strong word if you believe they are equal. If you truly think they are equally bad, why do you continually describe the Democrats as being bad because they allow the Republicans to do bad things? Surely there would be no need to use them as a proxy if both parties are doing equally bad things on their own? You know deep down that the Democrats are a passive evil rather than an active one, don’t pretend you believe they are identical.

Not going to bother responding to this well, but if you want to know my understanding of the situation:

                They’re the same.

                No

They both fuck over minorities, […] they both fuck over women, they both fuck over queer people,

Tends to be Republicans by a fairly wide margin

                they both increase deportations,

See my previous comments in this thread, this is true but I do not believe deportations under Biden have caused as much harm as the ones under Trump.

                they are both warmongers,

Again, true but tends to favor Republicans. Obama got the Iran conflict under control until Trump blew it up again, for example.

                they both do genocide,

                True

they both fuck over the climate,

True, but favors Republicans especially with the complete gutting of the EPA recently.

they are both parties full of geriatric

Yes, in fact the average age is basically identical

                genocidal

Yes, although detractors tend to be Democrats as it’s the best party for them

                fascist

Same as above, nonfascists always choose the Democratic party. I wonder why?

                pedophiles.

                HEAVILY favors Republicans.

Conclusion: Democrats are a better choice than republicans, and claiming they are the same is illogical.

                  Wowww so uncivil!

Read the link, you’re saying absolutely nothing that hasnt been addressed.

why do you continually describe the Democrats as being bad because they allow the Republicans to do bad things?

When they’re not already doing it themselves it is because the republicans are already doing it for them. Like the crime bill.
If it werent in their interests then they would roll it back or oppose it.

The rest, and really this point too, has already been adressed by the link. Im not interested in arguing for the sake of arguing, so I won’t waste more time giving rebuttals to something that is already refuted by the linking of another comment. If you actually want to discuss these things, then do it with the modicum of civility it requires to actually engage with the other. Otherwise you’re just trolling.

Yes. So it signals apathy with the current system.

Voting third party will not elect a third party candidate yet, but it will more clearly show your desire for change and has a better chance of meaningfully affecting the behavior of the dominant parties or other voters.

The word ‘better’ has no place here. Objectively.
