The Trump regime is preparing sweeping sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC) in an attempt to destroy the world’s highest criminal court. The move is Donald Trump’s latest move to defend wanted Israeli war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu.
The sanctions would ban a majority of financial transactions with the court, isolating it from the US dollar and — if the global banking system capitulates as expected — from that too. Trump is expected to make a final decision during this week’s UN General Assembly gathering in New York City.
Trump has already abused US financial power to sanction the ICC president, judges and former chief prosecutor Karim Khan, as well as engineering Khan’s removal from his post, despite judges finding no evidence against him in sexual harassment allegations.
The US has previously said it would dismantle the ICC if it did not drop its charges against Netanyahu and other Israelis who have committed crimes against humanity.
Why does he care? Every other US war criminal president didnt give a shit about the ICC.
I think all of the middle powers want the ICC and need it to protect themselves from those trying to destroy it.

The ICC is a joke, I welcome dismantling it, it is a selective justice organization and lacks enforcement of its findings. Neither Israel nor the United States is a party to the Rome Statute, meaning the ICC holds no direct jurisdiction over them. The arrest warrant for Netanyahu was completely symbolic. ICC has and always intended to be a tool of neocolonial oppression in the hands of imperialists.

most of the countries in europe are party to the rome statute, so they are under its jurisdiction, but the way they’ve bent over backwards to find loopholes that guarantee that netanyahu won’t be arrested prove that the icc’s existence is meaningless.

it’s the narrative they don’t like, not the institution, and they’re okay with unsupportive narratives so long as they’re relegated to the fringes of the western world – the us empire depends on propaganda narratives to inflict misery in the name of short term profits and cobert prove how they’ll react if any of unsupportive narrative becomes mainstream.

This take doesn’t make much sense in light of the facts. Why issue a warrant against Netanyahu instead of capitulating to the Zionist narrative? Why create a legal quagmire in member states? Also, while it doesn’t have “direct jurisdiction” over non-members, i.e., the member states themselves aren’t bound to enforce its decisions, the member states do have obligations against members of non-member state who are indicted. That’s the whole thing. Palestine is a signatory, so they can issue a warrant against Netanyahu for his crimes there. The move to dismantle a court obviously drags down the legitimacy of a state, as well, so why would they fight so hard against a purely symbolic decision.
It’s about maintaining appearances and the thin veneer of legitimacy for those gullible enough to fall for it. Same reason why the U.S. sent aid to Palestinians while helping Israel bomb them.
As far as Trump’s motivations, he is a dementia patient motivated by greed and narcissism. Most of the things he does makes no sense at all. He has beef with the ICC, now they are his enemy. It’s not that deep. There’s a reason people call him Comrade Trump, because he is actively destroying the US empire and I honestly welcome it.
