I mean, people say that, but for me it wasn’t a problem, I just picked one when I got started. Didn’t feel like a major decision since you can just switch again if you are unhappy.

Naah I think it’s super useful to know a bit about all popular distros. This makes you able to actually take part in conversations about what distro to pick for example.

I’ve ran them all at some point in my life, which makes me able to understand that it’s not just “different package manager” as some people say.

You can install them all on any distro I believe. I use Arch and installing Plasma is just a single command, same with Gnome and the others. After install you can pick which desktop to use after the graphical login screen loads.

There are some annoyances, like for example if you have both Gnome and Plasma installed, and you type Files to open a file app, you get the Gnome file app even in Plasma since it’s named Files. To use the Plasma file app, you have to type Dolphin instead.

Same with settings app, I often open the Gnome settings app instead of the Plasma settings app by mistake since it’s called Settings.

But these are not bugs per se, it’s just because I’m used to typing something…

Why would you use the Debian, it has the oldest packages and kernel of all distros. I would maybe run that on a server, but probably just use Ubuntu LTS instead.

For desktop you should try Pop OS. Really good distro from System 76.

Stay away from Ubuntu, it’s very buggy for desktop. I tried it six months ago, fresh install, and the console app wouldn’t even open on a fresh install. No error message, just didn’t open. Great impression…

Yep, for me the most exciting moment in 2024 will be Cosmic being released and partly also the release of KDE 6, even though that probably won’t be a big deal. Just nice to use qt 6 I guess. It doesn’t have any new features really.

It will bite you after a while. I remember using alpine in a docker image many years ago and running a python program that needed some modules installed, where one of them required compiling c code. Naturally that didnt work on alpine since its using its own c library. So couldn’t run the python app at all on alpine.

Real professional engineers at Google. Reading the browser name is just so hard.

Linux version 6 is a bit of a stretch though since it’s just the kernel. I guess they could have put Ubuntu 23 up there to make it “win”…

Been using it forever. It’s the best browser despite Google sabotaging it and making it slower on their sites.

I wouldn’t feel guilty denying a few bucks from a billion dollar company but that’s me. :)

It’s all relative. When their first cars came, nobody else even had cars that could go that speed and that range. That was considered very good back then.

Now in 2024, a good electric car needs to be reliable and safe. Tesla is struggling with that and have focused their attention on their self driving capabilities, which also has had many issues and accidents.

So much talk about Tesla. It’s like people don’t realize Tesla is not even relevant anymore. They were first with good electric cars, but their cars all have reliability problems and tech problems.

In the mean time, other manufacturers like Kia is eating their lunch without much publicity. :)

It’s so funny that having a different theme makes the computer hard to use for some parents. :)
