    ❗️Belgium and Netherlands move to block goods from Israeli settlements

    Belgium and the Netherlands have moved to block goods originating from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, joining a growing number of European countries imposing trade restrictions on settlement products.

    The Netherlands’ ban takes effect on 22 September, while Belgium has adopted a decree establishing a system that will systematically deny import authorization for goods shown or reasonably suspected to originate in settlements.

    The measures follow similar action by Ireland, Spain and Norway, while 12 countries, including the UK, France and Canada, announced this month that they would introduce or support national or European restrictions on settlement goods.

    In a July 2024 advisory opinion, the International Court of Justice found Israel’s continued presence in the occupied Palestinian territory unlawful and called on states to take steps to prevent trade or investment relations that help maintain the situation.
