The Congress for Cultural Freedom and groups like the Frankfurt School and much of the New Left was dedicated to taking socialism from its roots and reducing it to a mild, non-revolutionary version.
That said the mainstreaming of socialism can be a double edge sword for them because it means that it allows some ideas of socialism to be introduced and adapted into the mainstream allowing for people to be more easily radicalized into a better more revolutionary form of socialism.
