For YT I’d recommend enhanced-h264ify for best performance. Also FF with real ublock but that’s personal preference. In my experience on low end YT is slow no matter the browser.

WSL: If your friend is a dev and needs Linux cli utilities, use this. Dual Boot: If your friend wants to daily drive Linux, use this. Shrink Windows NTFS partition within Windows then install Linux to blank space. Virtualbox: Testing ground for dual boot, your friend can familiarise themselves with Linux safely using a VM.

enhanced-h264ify prevents my PC from cooking itself when playing YT.

Not anymore, if you use desktop website of addons.mozilla.org, you can install almost anything.

What is google cookie policy? Removal of 3rd party cookies? Also ublock works on regular firefox.

You can’t send your video, receiving video and sending/receiving audio work.

MS Office works oob on Crossover and could work on Wine with a bit of tinkering. Research if your college uses examination software. If they do you are either forced to either using Windows / Mac or gambling your academic carrier via running the software on Wine.

I had a USB with a faulty sector. Windows 10 froze for hours when I plugged it in. I got an error similar to “loading ctrl alt del interface failed”

Better organization and backup / restore. For example if you want to restore config files but don’t want to move over the large “.local” folder, applications that write to $HOME will create diifculty.

If the PC has an SSD, install anything you want, the PC will handle it fine.

I used Enlightenment on Arch Linux for a year, in 2020-21. The PC had 4G ram and an HDD, Enlightenment was blazing fast. I could type enlightenment_start to a tty and reach a Wayland desktop under a second with 250M ram used total. E is still alive and kicking.
