I think that’s awesome that you’re trying to learn.

Linux only indirectly has to do with programming. Linux is an operating system, like MacOS or Windows. An operating system is basically everything on your PC that’s not the apps, so the desktop, task bar, start menu, settings menu, … are all part of it. And of course a lot of stuff you cannot see because apps need a lot of ground work to function properly.

First let me say, you should bother. No matter if it clicks for you or it doesn’t, trying something new is always a good idea.

If you want to get into Linux, you can install it instead of windows / MacOS on one of your devices. Make sure to backup all your files beforehand of course. Then you download an ISO from a Linux distribution (the flavour of Linux you want). if you just want something that works, Linux mint is one of the most straightforward ones. You download a “.iso” for that. Then you use a tool like “Rufus” and a USB stick, and put your iso file on that USB stick. After that, you plug that into the PC you wanna put Linux on, reboot, and look for the USB stick in the boot menu (different on every PC). And then you will be guided through the installation of Linux mint. After that you should be done and when the PC shows your new Linux mint desktop, you are done and you can unplug your USB stick. So much for Linux.

Getting into programming is a little bit less of a process, and more logic puzzles to understand how code works. I would recommend you look at an easier language, for example python, learn the basics of that and then set your sails on an intermediate project. For example a Webserver can be a cool one.

I know Lemmy hates AIs but I also gotta mention every time you wanna learn something, ask AI all the small questions. I personally like the free Claude AI; especially when you start out with a new hobby an AI will be helpful 99% of the time.

But most of all, do it for fun, stop when it’s too frustrating, just keep going and stick to it for a while, everything else comes with time. You’ll quickly see if this is interesting to you or not, and I hope it is :)

  • “Not every ‘WTF micro$oft’ moment is a slam dunk,”

Brother, your quotas of shit hitting the fan is reaching fecal velocity of new degrees. Your company’s current state of existence has absolved you of the right to a balanced perspective.

What I’m trying to say is it’s never gonna Microsoft 100% of the time, but at this point no one trusts you, and you’ve earned that, and now you have to live with the consequences. I know this Microsoft contact is probably not the reason, but he is still working there, and that means he deserves some of the blame on a constructive level.

  • This is more of a “be aware of your footprint” and less of a “security concern”. This post is pressing hard on the fear of data getting stolen, however none of these things are major ways in which your data gets stolen.

It’s phishing, social engineering, default configurations, weak passwords, no MFA, compromised online-services and supply-chain-attacks, and then, and only then are we even talking about actual CVEs in your local system and app environment. And usually we are talking old ones; for apps which you haven’t updates in a while, as they are the most common.

What I’m saying is for your target audience, this is exactly the wrong thing to focus on. Tech savvy users might wanna look into this but they are very likely aware of all these things, and amateurs definitely should focus on basic security practices.

  • I tried but there’s so many things that I need to be able to turn from bad to good in just a few clicks, and that’s basically irreplaceable for me rn.

I tried reaper and even if I learned it more thoroughly it would still result in 3x the time on every single process in song production, mix & master and that’s unacceptable for me.

Heard a lot about bitwig and that would probably be my preferred alternative but that unfortunately still leaves the issue of third party Plugins.

I’ve been trying to find a way to do this properly for quite a while now but I have yet to find a way to do this that’s sustainable long term.

Not trying to talk down your suggestions because I genuinely think they could work for others, just adding more information to why that’s unfortunately not enough for me to switch completely.

Btw for my servers and backup notebooks I already use lots of Linux. Anything not main driver kinda works perfectly with Linux and most of all it keeps on working when I need it. In fact I suspect my hardware will give in before the os and or software will pose any issues.

  • Honestly right now there’s no way to use 90% of the industry standard audio plugins and most popular DAWs on Linux. FL Studio and Ableton do work on Linux but very unstable and as long as they’re not stable you can kinda skip the latency talk, because stability is quintessential. You are bound to native plugins and as long as alternatives are way harder to use and take longer to learn configure, there’s a massive overhead, not even talking about the ones that genuinely do not work even with wine and or winetricks, bottle, etc…

The same goes for video and photo editing as well as post effects. Although I have to admit you genuinely have more options and some setups even though not much more stable to technically work already.

Games are also annoying but I just don’t play valorant or battlefield 6 or any other games that are kind of incompatible by design, so if that was the only thing I could manage.

And lastly (but everyone knows), office compatibility is still an issue because sometimes I need to do something in Microsoft office to ensure it still works when I send it over.

Honestly the real deal breaker for me is the first paragraph. I currently mix & master a band and produce music by myself, with friends and do small audio jobs for other people. Gimme an environment I don’t have to pour another decade into and I’ll switch. In it’s current state I will not place a bet that if I give it my all things will still work when I need them to and that’s the bare minimum.

  • I mean it depends on what you wanna do.

Of course if you goal is to make money, drawing comics might be a very tedious way, but if you do it for fun (which I assume) then just do it.

As some people here have mentioned there might be better ways to go about your creation process regarding language, but make it fun first, and then you’ll gladly adapt to make it digestible (at least in my experience).

  • This

Don’t get me wrong, ethically this situation becomes very complex, but let’s not kid ourselves: the evidence is unfortunately very strong. In fact this is one of the easier cases for the prosecution to try imo.

To prove intent under the statute of Murder 2 in NY they have:

    • a weapon him
    • matching shell casings
    • video evidence
    • cellphone data linking him to a route away from the scene

    Cause of death is self-evident.

There is no legal justification applicable here (self defense, …)

There’s also a chance this will get a terrorism enhancement. Supporting evidence would be the targeted nature, the casings and manifesto.

He can go for an insanity plea or extreme emotional disturbance, however this usually goes to the punishment phase and not the trial phase, making this almost irrelevant for the conviction.

The one thing he has going for him is jury nullification. This is legally dubious and usually can and should not be argued, for very legitimate reasons; however the jury can make their decision basically without justification and therefore this is very plausible. The probability is a different question which is hard to answer.

I do not like murder, but I sympathize a lot with him, however especially because of that I also have to keep it realistic and accept that legally the case against him is pretty strong.

TL;DR there’s strong evidence against him, and if there’s no jury nullification he will most likely be convicted.
