From what I understand it could be nothing or very big. Ban only primary trade from illegal settlements = sounds like something, but is a very little part of total trade with Israel. Ban primary + secondary = ban of 99% of all trade since almost all Israeli products have some component or likewise originating from industry in the settlements.

This as been part of my thinking as well. The proposal from the UK seems to have some minor suggestion to secondary sanctions, which was more substantial then I’d previously expected, even if just rhetorically.

        Per The Cradle:

The measures include an import ban on goods from illegal settlements, sanctions on services such as construction and financing, and a ban on UK advertising for settlement properties. Britain will also impose personal sanctions on individuals accused of promoting settler violence and introduce new restrictions on arms licences and other exports that “materially contribute to the occupation.”

That last line is what interests me. It sounds more like the skeleton to potentially major sanctions, but is worded so vaguely with everything else that it could be interpreted as minor. How do you argue something “materially contributes”? Using precedent against imperial enemies, it usually means anything that could allow a sanctioned nation’s people to live.

However, this is Israel, I think it’s obvious that the imperialists won’t apply that to their little outpost in West Asia. So it’s weird to include it unless it’s meant to be more like a pressure valve of sorts.

When the entity is causing too many issues for the imperialists domestically, tighten the valve a little and bring about a more controllable zionist. When the imperialists are not having any issues, release the valve until it becomes a problem again.

Though this is too optimistic a viewpoint as well imo. Even if that was earnestly their intent, the issue remains of domestic Zionist elements the imperialists have allowed to fester in their soceity and institutions. Unless they make their soceity less habitable to zionists, they’re going to have an issue closing that valve due to the zionist “rust” on the mechanism.

Just my brief thoughts on the matter. Personally I lean towards the explanation that this is just western regimes trying to put up a facade of progress that really changes very little, in order to save face with their increasingly anti-zionist populations.

Yes I agree. I guess this is at least trending towards positive as they have to pretend to do something, things are really fermenting in the core. But whenever I hear western politicians talk about taking a “hard stance” towards Israel it usually boils down to sanctioning some random government officials (matters little) and at most “voting for sanctions on the illegal settlements”. There is never a good answer to the follow up question “Since the Israeli government if facilitating and de facto implementing these settlements, shouldn’t they also be sanctioned?”. It is so pathetic I can puke.

Almost all of these countries are ardent supporters of zionism anyway. I don’t know about Spain though.
