Hmm. Is there a pattern here with countries getting bolder after seeing the US getting debased by Iran? This and the Malaysia statement have got me thinking.
But I was not keeping close track in the past, so maybe there is already precedent for this kind of reaction to US imperialism from countries like them. Not really sure.
Probably not. The three letter agencies supported the coup against Dilma, same party as Lula, in 2016. Even then, it’s a somewhat rare anti-imperialist W from Lula.
Lula usually does not challenge the US directly, and instead resort to these bureaucratic or symbolic measures to counter US influence. But other than that, Lula is doing almost nothing to fight US influence in the region and PT’s position recently on Venezuela was just lame. PT is also doing almost nothing to bargain with the US over access to rare earth reserves in Brazil. So I think this current measure is just part of Lula’s electoral strategy.
