Oh people hate to be told this. They like having a singular thing to rage against, and if you’re not with them you’re against them. And it’s obvious that any tool is going to have concerns but people act like you are personally destroying the environment and taking jobs away and everything else that capitalism does with any technology.
I can only hope the things China is doing with AI will wake people up and stop them from their sci-fi movie paranoia.
I find this just keeps happening. People treat capitalism as if it’s a law of nature rather than a social construct, and then just find things to rage at rather than confronting the underlying root cause. Sadly, I already see people double down on the whole China is capitalist trope and using AI being developed there as further proof of that. The idea that this tech can be developed outside capitalism and applied in a socially positive way is a bridge too far it seems.
They won’t be able to ignore when China fully utilizes AI for stuff like space exploration. They’re already doing incredible things in the medical field, and it’s only a matter of time before this technology is going to be widely available to everyone. It’s at least nice to know this is a place where I can not only get positive information on this new tool, but also people who are also using it and discovering how else it can be applied, and not surrendering the technology to the same people who are currently using it for all the same things they’re raging about.
I think so as well, people in the west have a really narrow view of this tech focusing on LLMs and think it’s all just chat bots. But China is applying it far more broadly, as you mention, so we have more and more clear examples of AI being used for social good available to point to.

Yep, it’s always this reactionary tendency to condemn AI as a technology altogether when in reality the problem is a capitalist monopoly on technology that alienates us from it.
You could do without the words “about AI” or change “AI” to “anything.”
I feel like people have a harder time with this in AI context though.
AI is probably the most polarising development that I will ever witness. A lot of pro-AI extremists are stark raving mad misanthropes. A lot of those against it come from a petite bourgeois standpoint.
Yeah, it’s really rare to see genuine materialist analysis of the subject.
I think it’s more polarizing in leftist circles specifically. Normies aren’t against AI as a matter of principle.
I guess I’m the former. A lot of us come from the bottom of society and suffer ableism among other things and AI understands us much more easily than people do.
