How the fuck did they go from staunch U.S. ally to being pals with the Iranians and helping to administer the Straight of Hormuz?
This isn’t the best map of the maritime boundaries but it gets the point across. Basically the chokepoint can be crossed in either Iranian or Omani territorial waters. Making it a joint venture gives it lots of legal cover
Also the Omanis were the key mediator in the run up to the Ramadan war and Iran refrained from attacks on their territory. (I also think they don’t have any explicit US bases)
Ah, but tbh, even the absence of explicit U S. bases is interesting.
