“Gandalf” was a dwarf in Norse mythology. Tolkien didn’t invent the name.

Its pronounced Jirraffe.
For the curious “Gandalf” is made up of two old norse words “gandr” meaning a walking stick or staff and “álfr” moaning an elf. The movies pronounce it correctly of course.
Imagine if JK Rowling would do that last bit for us.
