I never did understand why they always try to bring stand-ups in these events. Most people don’t care for them and they often make the mood awkward, can we just skip to the awards?

Celebrities are also the worst people on the planet in terms of taking a joke. Obviously we saw the worst case with Will Smith, but they always pan out to the audience and celebrities never know how to just chuckle and move on

Typically comedians are the only thing worth watching in an award show like that. Otherwise it’s just a procession of thank you speaches. You need something to break that up, IMHO.

You’re also hiring a writer/performer. If you’re hiring a comedian then you don’t have to write every single line, and hopefully you’re getting someone who can improve a little if things are running on time.

I think it’s a feedback loop. Everyone else is doing it, so we have to too! Even if it does make everything worse.

    From NY Times:

Reviews for Mr. Koy were harsh, with critics taking particular issue with the comedian’s bizarre mid-monologue pivot, in which he blamed other writers for some of his dull jokes. “Yo, I got the gig 10 days ago, you want a perfect monologue?” he said. “Yo, shut up. You’re kidding me, right? Slow down. I wrote some of these — and they’re the ones you’re laughing at.”

    😂

Koy continued: “The key moment in Barbie is when she goes from perfect beauty to bad breath, cellulite, and flat feet — or what casting directors call ‘character actor’

That’s esteemed Academy Award nominated character actress Margot Robbie to you!

(Come on, I literally started doing the ‘esteemed character actress’ bit on Lemmy months ago, get some new material.)

This is the best summary I could come up with:

(Full disclosure: Rolling Stone’s parent company, PMC, owns Dick Clark Productions.)

A number of high-profile comedians reportedly turned down the gig, perhaps owing to a lack of prep time given its proximity to the end of the actors’ strike and the HFPA’s past, including former Oscars host Chris Rock, Ali Wong, and the trio of Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes, who co-host the “SmartLess” podcast.

On Dec. 21, stand-up comic Jo Koy was announced as its last-minute host — just a couple of weeks before the Jan. 7 ceremony, which was broadcast on CBS for the first time.

I love Oppenheimer — especially the first season.” As the camera cut to an unamused Christopher Nolan, Koy added, “That’s so stupid…”

“Oppenheimer and Barbie are competing for cinematic box office achievement,” Koy offered.

Koy continued: “The key moment in Barbie is when she goes from perfect beauty to bad breath, cellulite, and flat feet — or what casting directors call ‘character actor.’”
