  • Turtles are kind of in between with their wedge-shaped heads. They need the awareness to hide from predators, but some of them are also predators themselves or they at least snap at fruits and veggies to eat them.

Here’s my tortoise doing his best disappointed-in-you baby yoda:

And here’s the yellow belly slider locking target on to some shrimp.

But it sounds like the rules aren’t as consistent in the water, judging from other comments. Even something like an alligator snapping turtle’s eyes are no further forward than these pics.

it may not always be projection, but the narrative they’ve been convinced of by their media

You are absolutely correct for the vast majority of ordinary conservatives, in my experience anyway.

They don’t care about finding the best cause or even about being correct. They need to feel outraged and persecuted, so once that’s fed to them they latch on.

It’s pretty wild. There were a few years in the early 2000s where I listened to a lot of talk radio on my commute. I had not yet stumbled upon things like streams/downloads of the Howard Stern show, or the world of podcasts. So I got to hear a bunch of the scary republican talking points back then.

That was about a decade before the dictator projection discussed in the meme, and what sticks out in my memory that is super relevant today?

    “Activist judges!”

    “Legislating from the bench!”

  • A lot of right-wing people use … as an excuse to not care about … at all…

I thought your comment would be one of those rare instances where you can make a sentence more accurate by generalizing it.

They REALLY like doing it with people, and ruining the environment and/or climate is just shitting on other people (especially the poor ones) with an added level of abstraction.

I don’t know if this is correct about platypuses, but this IS generally how you handle snapping turtles and you are much more likely to deal with one of those.

Their dangerous trick has nothing to do with their legs though. It’s their neck. It is very long, very flexible, and fast. If you hold them the wrong way, they can hit you with a reach-around that is very much not the friendly sex move.

Stay tuned for more wildlife handling tips from me, your local halfway engineer-turned-farmer!

Edit to add a photo I found on an informational website about these longbois:

  • Yeah. I can’t stay away completely, but it is unquestionable how much better I am in general when I spend more free time outside versus in front of a screen.

Edit: I don’t mean to make screens sound like the bad guy. It’s more about engaging all of your senses and interacting with 100% of your immediate environment, rather than keeping your vision and mind focused on the 24/7 fire hose of only the 0.001% most potent triple-distilled negativity sourced from the entire fucking planet.

The internet is like having omnipotence but only for the knowledge that messes with our brains. We don’t get to see all the nice shit from across the planet 50x a day.

    snail genocide

Me and the (probably) other two lemmings who have ponds:

Not that I kill them on purpose. But once the little pond snails make it in and multiply like crazy, there are a ton of them in any locations where the fish don’t have access to hoover them up. Just about any of my maintenance tasks will crush some of them plus a bunch of random larvae.

I guess that’s an inevitable downside to having a hobby where I care for a flourishing little ecosystem.

Yeah it’s a funny joke, but this kind of shit actually works on people to an alarming degree.

I think it’s an extension of dunning-kruger, essentially. These dummies love “knowing” something that all those smug educated people that study it for a living somehow do not know. It’s something I see in my more conservative relatives too, the need to put others down to establish your legitimacy.

Even decades ago I remember hearing in conservative media the revelations that water vapor was a greenhouse gas, or that methane was, or that the sun goes through cycles, or that the earth’s orbit isn’t perfectly circular. Every single time it was discussed with the wonder of that brain exploding in space dude meme. Just flinging that confusion and doubt in all directions, knowing that each piece will probably be the thing that convinces part of the audience.

USian here, and totally agree. The willful ignorance is stunning to behold.

But help me with my potential ignorance here - is this meme also suggesting that ordinary citizens of other developed countries know about these things? Do high school history and social studies classes have a day or a week that discuss US imperialism & shady dealings of recent decades?

My impression has always been that people in other countries read about this awful shit in the same places I do online, and that the differences in mainstream knowledge are about much more basic stuff like coal and climate change being bad while healthcare is good.

Remember, the #1 search on google on Election Day was “did Joe Biden drop out”

Jesus fucking christ. I have not read that before, but it is the most believable thing I’ve seen all week.

I’ll look it up tomorrow. I am always curious, but I cannot handle having this fact confirmed to me right now, lol.

I’m literally a yankee, as in a lifelong resident of the area north of the Mason-Dixon line and I’ve visited several historical civil war sites over the decades because they’re among the inexpensive points of interest within several hours of here.

I think you’re both kind of right. Everything the previous comment said is correct IMO about it starting with a negative connotation and people in the south probably hating it. But modern online usage feels pretty respectful too. Even in a professional setting, if I were on a typical call and somebody from Europe referred to somebody thousands of km (or miles, lol) away on the other side of the US as one of the yankees/yanks, I don’t think it would even register as something I’d remember. (well NOW it will because of this comment, thanks lemmy! :D )

Plus more recently, those of us who do wild shit like pay attention to the outside world don’t exactly take offense to people insulting this fucked up country/government/culture/etc. We’re right here agreeing with you. So something like “yankee” doesn’t stand out much when you read somebody across the world write “fuck all USians” and you think to yourself “…I can see that. That’s fair.”
