This feels like such a double edged sword living in the US where Israel-supporting police-loving rich capitalists are widely labeled as the radical left if they dare to suggest that people should get healthcare or maybe we shouldn’t spend trillions blowing up brown people on the other side of the globe.

You know, the land of fucking geniuses where the batshit crazy pedo Nazi choice won the popular vote in 2024 against the Israel-supporting actual-cop capitalist who is right-wing to most of the rest of the world.

I’m not even sure what my point is here, maybe just expressing frustration. The overton window here is so far to the right, and people so passively absorb propaganda every day, that it feels like the entire spectrum of people from leftists to liberals need to form a coalition to at least slow & reverse the movement to the right, even if their end goals are all very different.

What it feels like is that the Republican party was actually supposed to be the controlled opposition to scare people into being comfortable voting for liberals, but then the propaganda worked too well and the mustache twirling evil caricatures got to be in charge instead. At this point I can only hope the level of ridiculousness knocks some sense into more people.

  • I think the word “relatively” in the previous comment is doing some heavy lifting.

If you are going to spend a few hours of your limited free time to plant the shrubs, even if the materials and transportation are free to you, compare that with the relative cost of a small environmental fine to a trillion dollar company building a billion dollar data center.

The people at the top might not even realize anything happened, if anything even does happen.

  • It’s that way with Webb since it focuses on infrared, but I thought hubble used the visible spectrum.

After a brief search, it looks like Hubble uses the entire optical spectrum which includes some IR and UV along with visible. It depends on the specific image, but the deep field stuff looks like it was a combination of visible and IR, which makes sense considering red shift. But the bluer objects were captured in the visible.

So they inevitably had to compress the spectrum for the photos, but speaking as somebody who has taken tens of thousands of photos in RAW format, all the colors in every photo are translated data. :) (that also goes for the screen displaying the final image using a mix of three wavelengths rather than the actual colors of the original light)

  • That’s an angle that more people should talk about, honestly.

The mistreatment of the American populace isn’t just to keep a steady supply of cheap labor for the rich people’s investments, it’s to keep a steady supply of cheap lives for the government to do their dirty work.

My generation’s dead and disabled veterans fell in service to that sweet Iraqi oil. Oh and the Saddam hidden underground meme, can’t forget that one!

  • Did anybody else here make the grave mistake of doing this in Oblivion, the game notorious for enemy auto-leveling?

I went off doing random shit the moment that Captain Picard let me out of that sewer, and by the time I showed up to be the Hero of Kvatch I was this crazy invisible assassin of doom, and probably at the top of the thieves guild or the dark brotherhood or both.

So then if memory serves, the town is under attack from monsters and is on fire. The game drops me into a small walled-in arena and instead of whatever lv 1 imps and cockroaches are normally there, I’m holding my bow and arrow and looking up the fiery eyes of half a dozen 12-foot-tall giga-chad linebacker demons from hell. Oh and look they are already sprinting in my direc-- DEAD!

I probably took some creative liberties there but you get the idea.

I think I had to lower the difficulty slider to get through that room. Then I put it back to normal assuming the worst was over, only to have the game put me through a CORRIDOR of hyper-strong enemies next! So twice I had to lower the difficulty.

On one hand, this happened because my character was a min-maxed glass cannon, and a stereotypical one at that (stealth archer, how original! /s). But that same character had no problem with the entire game before or after that town because the whole point of the game is to have the freedom to approach encounters as you wish.

So in many ways that situation was less about auto-leveling, and more about the meme-worthy situations where a boss late in the game requires completely new mechanics the player has never seen. Or even better, it was the anti-forced-stealth-mission!

  • Turtles are kind of in between with their wedge-shaped heads. They need the awareness to hide from predators, but some of them are also predators themselves or they at least snap at fruits and veggies to eat them.

Here’s my tortoise doing his best disappointed-in-you baby yoda:

And here’s the yellow belly slider locking target on to some shrimp.

But it sounds like the rules aren’t as consistent in the water, judging from other comments. Even something like an alligator snapping turtle’s eyes are no further forward than these pics.

it may not always be projection, but the narrative they’ve been convinced of by their media

You are absolutely correct for the vast majority of ordinary conservatives, in my experience anyway.

They don’t care about finding the best cause or even about being correct. They need to feel outraged and persecuted, so once that’s fed to them they latch on.

It’s pretty wild. There were a few years in the early 2000s where I listened to a lot of talk radio on my commute. I had not yet stumbled upon things like streams/downloads of the Howard Stern show, or the world of podcasts. So I got to hear a bunch of the scary republican talking points back then.

That was about a decade before the dictator projection discussed in the meme, and what sticks out in my memory that is super relevant today?

    “Activist judges!”

    “Legislating from the bench!”

  • A lot of right-wing people use … as an excuse to not care about … at all…

I thought your comment would be one of those rare instances where you can make a sentence more accurate by generalizing it.

They REALLY like doing it with people, and ruining the environment and/or climate is just shitting on other people (especially the poor ones) with an added level of abstraction.

I don’t know if this is correct about platypuses, but this IS generally how you handle snapping turtles and you are much more likely to deal with one of those.

Their dangerous trick has nothing to do with their legs though. It’s their neck. It is very long, very flexible, and fast. If you hold them the wrong way, they can hit you with a reach-around that is very much not the friendly sex move.

Edit to add a photo I found on an informational website about these longbois:
