The money spent on the Apollo program wasn’t all packed into a suitcase and taken to the moon, it was spent and reinjected into the economy. In particular, some of it went to the wages of some of the most highly-skilled, best-paying jobs that women and black people could get in the fifties and sixties, and that did a lot of good directly, before we even get onto indirect effects like inspiring generations of people to pursue a career in STEM subjects or developing technologies that would be used elsewhere.

Something else worth noting is that instance admins do a lot more moderation than Reddit admins did, so the burden on the moderators for individual communities can be smaller. lemmy.ml in particular has a reputation for having admins who actively intervene a lot.

Yes. Every time, it’s gone less well than opening a banana from the stem end, unless the banana was horrendously underripe. I’ve never had the problem the alternative approach is claiming to fix unless I’ve intentionally opened the banana badly on purpose to prove a point about the problem really being people opening from the stem end incompetently.

Bananas are the way they are through millenia of selective breeding, so there’s no reason to think that monkeys know anything we don’t. If pinching the bottom is easier than bending the stem, your banana isn’t ripe yet and doesn’t want to be eaten until later.

If anyone’s in this thread because they’re looking for a new mail client after Microsoft killed the old Mail app, and haven’t been happy with the typical suggestions of using each email service’s web interface or Thunderbird, I found I don’t hate Mailspring (with the fancy features disabled - I just want my email client to do email well and don’t want extras that provide clutter).

Better have comments on Crunchyroll than make me go to R*ddit to find out if I missed something in an episode, especially as anime subreddits typically start permitting episode spoilers before the dub for that episode is out, so there’s often nowhere except the dub comments on Crunchyroll that’s safe to look for dub watchers.

The perfect, good, mediocre, and just barely tolerable are all enemies. Sometimes bad is better as it doesn’t erode the motivation to solve the problem and means you’re more likely to end up with a good solution later. Often, when people accuse others of letting the perfect be the enemy of the good, the option was neither perfect nor good, just mediocre or barely tolerable. The exception is when one solution can go on to evolve into a better one, but it can still be better to wait until it does before deploying it.

I’m not convinced this is exactly applicable to the story in the OP, though. The compromise would have eroded the motivation to vote for the original legislation in that election, but probably made it more likely that it could have happened in the next one, and made the consequences of putting it off that long slightly less bad.

There are kinds of analytics that are incompatible with the GPL, as you can’t restrict what users do with GPL software, and that includes asking children not to submit analytics containing information you’re not allowed to know about children under COPPA. The only options are to hope your software is only used by adults, or not implement any kinds of analytics that collect the relevant kinds of personal information.
